Pierce Cardew, An English viscount hunting a blackmailer, disguises himself as a footman to work for a young French widow, Mélusine de Gilocourt.​ Pierce is trying to discover if Mélusine is involved in the blackmail plot to ruin his stepfather.

 

After a lifetime of being controlled by men, Mélusine is determined to assert her independence--but her charismatic new footman has an infuriating tendency to issue orders, rather than obey them.
